  1. Who is Lar Familiaris?

Lar Familiaris is the name of the guardian spirit or the household god of Euclio’s house. Euclio’s daughter worships him and looks after him regularly. Lar Familiaris is not a human being, he is a God who is invisible but appears on the stage to deliver the prologue.

  1. Why is Staphyla fed up with Euclio?

At the very beginning of the play, we see that Euclio bickers with Staphyla for no reason which makes Staphyla flabbergasted. He scolds her without any reason because he wants her to get out of the house for a little while so that he may be able to take a look at his pot of gold and make sure that it is safe. But Staphyla does not know about his mentality and that’s why she becomes fed up with him.

  1. Why does Megadorus want to marry at last?

At the beginning of the play, we see that Megadorus opposes the very idea of marriage. He is opposed to the idea of an elderly man marrying an elderly woman. That’s why, when his sister Eunomia comes up with a marriage proposal for him, he becomes shocked. But finally, he says that if he marries, he would marry the young daughter ( Phaedria) of his neighbour, Euclio.

  1. What does Euclio buy for his daughter’s wedding?

Euclio went to the market to buy provisions for his daughter’s wedding feast but he comes back quite empty-handed; because according to him, everything in the market was too expensive. Then, he informs us that he has bought only a packet of incense and a bunch of flowers which she would place around the altar of their household god to ask for his blessing.

  1. “What do you know of my character?” – What does Megadorus want to convey to Euclio here?

Megadorus falls in love with Phaedria, daughter of Euclio, but he doesn’t know how to tell her father about his feelings for Phaedria. Then, he gets a chance to express his thoughts for Phaedria to Euclio. And after hearing everything from Megadorus, Euclio says that he thinks that Megadorus has a good family background and above all, he has a gentle heart and he knows nothing against him.

  1. Why does Lyconides want to meet Euclio?

Lyconides is one of the major characters of Plautus’ The Pot of Gold. He is painted with a tinge of sensibility and rationality by the playwright. When we read the play we come to know that he is having a secret relationship with Euclio’s daughter, Phaedria. We also come to know that Megadorus is intending to marry Phaedria. But Lyconides’ mother dissuades Megadorus from marrying her so that her son could do so. Then, acting upon Megadorus’ guidance, Lyconides manages to obtain the pot of gold which his slave had stolen. Now he wants to return the pot of gold to Euclio and asks for his daughter’s hand in marriage. That’s why Lyconides wants to meet Euclio.

  1. Why does Euclio want to drive Staphyla out of his house?

Euclio wants to drive Staphyla out of his house suspecting that she is plotting of stealing the pot of gold. But except Euclio no one knows about the pot of gold.

  1. Why does Lar Familiaris give the pot of gold to Euclio?

The house God gives a pot of gold to Euclio because Euclio”s daughter shows great devotion and pays regular obeisance to the household God. Pleased with her homeage, the family god decides that it’s the right time to give the wealth to Euclio so that he can arrange for the dowry needed to marry off his daughter.

  1. What do women demand when they are brought with dowries, according to Megadorus?

According to Megadorus, women who brought bountiful dowries generally demand expensive gifts from their husbands and unreasonably wish that they must live in gold and purple and have maids, pages, lackeys, mules muleteers, and carriages to ride in.

 

10. Why did Euclio agree to get her daughter married to Megadorus?

 

When Megadorus expresses his wish to marry Phaedria, his proposal was gladly accepted by Euclio as Megadorus did not want any dowry from Euclio for the marriage.

Lyconides’ servant  stole the pot of gold from Euclio.

Euclio suspected many people who might steal his pot of gold. He suspected his housekeeper, Megadorus, the cooks working in his house, the slave who finally stole his pot of gold.

He ultimately gives the pot of Gold to Lyconides as his daughter’s dowry. He says that the possession of the gold has made his life miserable and now he is happy because he finally realizes that mental peace is the ultimate peace.

 

 

15. Why does Megadorus send cooks to Eucolio’s house?

 

Megadorus knows that Euclio is very poor. He is kind and sympathetic enough to agree to marry Euclio’s daughter and arranges the wedding feast at his own cost and sends his servants to Euclio’s house to prepare the wedding feast.

 

16. Why does Euclio start beating the servants?

 

Euclio starts beating the servants because they talk loosely and loudly in his house while engaging in work. Besides, he suspects that they have been sent to his house to rob his pot of gold.

 

17. What does Eunomia try to dissuade her brother Megadorus from?

 

Eunomia tries to dissuade her brother Megadorus from marrying Phaedria who is going to give birth to Lyconides’ baby. The brother finally agrees and admits to settling the marriage of Liconides in his place.
