SUMMARY OF THE POEM

Once the poet met a village girl. She was eight years old. She had thick, beautiful curly hair round her head. The girl was not dressed in fine clothes and her manners were not refined. But her eyes were beautiful. The poet asked her about the number of her brothers and sisters. The girl replied that they were seven in number

. The poet wanted to know about her brothers and sisters. The girl replied that two of them lived at Conway. The other two had gone to sea. The remaining two were lying in the churchyard. Finally

, she herself lived with her mother in the churchyard cottage. The poet argued that two of her brothers and sisters were dead and they should not be counted. Then they were only five in number. But the girl did not agree. She told that his brother and sister were lying side by side in the churchyard near their cottage. Their graves were green and they could be easily seen. So the girl argued that they were seven, not five. The poet failed to convince the innocent girl about death and that one should not count deads with those who were alive.
